The following letter was received upon the above matter :-—.••
Militia'and Volunteer Office,
Thames, 23rd May, 1879. Alexander Hume, Esq., Secretary to Proposed Cavalry Troop. Dear Sir,—On receipt of your request' (as already informed you)j I wired TJnder-Secre-tary for Defence, recommending acceptance: of your services. He replied that the; Hon. Defence Minister was in Napier, and 'would be communicated with;/ As no further reply was received, and knowing Defence' Minister had returned to Wellington, I wired again yesterday and received the following, which please communicate to your Chairman: — "Defence Minister wishes application for Cavalry purposes to stand over for the present.—H. E. Beadeb, ITnder-Secretary Defence. Wellington, May 22nd,1879."—1am, dear sir, yours truly, T. L. Mttbbay, Major. ■
