Thames Borough Council.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held at the Council Chambers last evening. Present —His Worship the Mayor, Crs Brassey, McGowan, Hanseri, and Price. APOLOGIES. Apologies for absence were, received from . Crs Wilson, Graham, Speight, ilhrenfried, and Mennie. - minutes. The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed.
OTJTWABD COBBEBPOITDENCE. A precis of outward correspondence was read over. CAB LICENSE, A letter was read from Mr Thomas Godkin, asking for a half year's cab. license. The Council having no power to. grant such,, it waa decided to inform Mr Godkin 0f the fact. COHTBACTOBS' APPLICATION. '
A letter was read from Millett and party, the contractors for clearing the Beoreation Ground, asking for some con-

BECBEATION G HOUND. : A letter was received from Mr Anders ton re the intention of the Council to fence the- Recreation Ground, and hold him or Mr Flett, who had purchased his property, liable for,half, the cost of the fence between the two properties. The writer asserted that the Council had agreed to let the present fence stand for a time. - ... > . .... ... ...... r , r . rr . rr : 1 The Town Clerk stated that the fence was rotten and out of the, line about six feet.., It r was.,resolved that Mr.Andertori be informed that the Council intended to have a new fence erected, and would expect him to bear his share of the cost. THE "WATER SUPPLY QUESTION. ; A letter was read from the Water Supply Qommittee covering the resolution requesting the Council to consider the advisability 'of purchasing the' County's interest in the water supply and in the large race. - - < l Cr McGowan said that the question was too large to open up for discussion by the Council as at present constituted. It would open up the question of the right of a local body to sell an endowment given for gold field purposes, and also the question of the right of another local body to purchase it. He. - therefore, moved the postponement of the consideration till next meeting. i Cr Brassey advocated the necessity "of taking immediate steps in the matter of the water supply. He, therefore, moved that tbe Mayor, Crs McGowan and Han* sen confer with the County Council, and ask them on what terms they ,were willing to dispose' of their interest in botn supplies. " « • - ! (Jr Hansen' said no doubt something must be done. He seconded the motion. < i The Mayor spoke in favor of the im« mediate steps being taken. >■ r j Cr Brassey's motion'was then carried. SHELLBACK BO AD. I A letter was received from the residents of Shellback Road,, asking the Council to make the same from the Borough boundary, to the Tararu Road. A letter was received from the Old l Siam shareholders on the same subject. Messrs Henderson and Scott waited on the Conn, oil,'and urged that the claims of the residents and the miners be considered. Referred to Works Committee* r MAINTENANCE OV IVNATICbI' . Mr John Graham/ Believing Officer, Auckland, wrote to the Council, enclosing a letter from the Public, Trustee, stating that lunatics from the Borough of Thames were supported at the Lunatic Asylum a^ the expense of the Borough. He bow askedi that a cheque be sent i,o \ him. Tb.3 matter was ordered to stand over, as there was a difference of opinion evidently between tbe Colonial ■ Secretary and the Public Trustee, as shown in correspondence received. - , 1 • a compiaint. r ' •-" | Mr Dickey, carter/ wrote' complaining of the speed irhrch Mr Souter's trucks travelled on the lines. On Tuesday last the .trucks had run into his cart and horse near the Big Pump gate, Beach Road. The Town Clerk said that the Council had power to regulate the speed. It was decided that the speed be regulated at a walking pace. BATE. Cr Hansen proposed that the Finance Committee be appointed a Committee'to draw up the annual statement on which the rates are struck. Carried. '"- BELIEVING OFFICER'S BEPOBT. The report of this officer stated that there were 47 names on the rationalist during last mont.'i, at the. cost to, the Borough of a fraction of less 1 than £1 5s 6d per day. The report was adopted. HEALTH OFFICEB'S BEPOLT. :>1 | Tbe report of this officer stated that 12 deaths had occurred in the Borough during the past month.- { FINANCE COMMITTEE'S BEPOBT. The monthly report was read and adopted. In reply to Cr Hansen, the Town Clerk stated that there was £160 due by burgesses for asphalt . ! Cr Hansen moved—" That the collector of rates, Mr Fleming, be instmcted, and authorised, by this Council to collect and recover all asphalt and other charges for footpaths, and all rents due, or that may !from time to time become due to this Council tor, and on account of, properties, tramways and other similar rights, making use of the services of the Council's messenger, James Battray, for such purposes as far as possible.", _ [ Seconded by Cr McGowan and carried. --* <* -" '< '• '
