WANGANUI.
Tuesday. In the Supreme Court this morning the grand jury found a true bill against. Win. Monk for felony and misdemeanor. Alfred Luscford, who yesterday was found guilty of horse stealing and recommended to mere; on account of his youth, was this morning sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labor. John Donaghy, yesterday found guilty of stealing £18 from a dwelling, was sentenced to one year's hard labor. Gr. W.Connor, yesterday found guilty of horse stealing and recommended to mercy on account of his youth, being only fifteen years old, was sentenced to six months' hard labour. Michael Free was this morning found guilty of maliciously wounding Denis Hurley, but strongly recommended to mercy, having received great provocation. He will receive sentence to-morrow.
At the conclusion of his Southern trip His Excellency the Governor proceeds to Auckland, where he will remain a month, and during the time probably visit the Thames.
The natives of Horowhenua block have stopped work at the back of the lake on the Otaki road, pending instructions from the Maori King. Governor Hinua is reported to be the leading spirit in the movement.
It is not intended to commence the collection of the land tax during the present financial year. The Ist of July will probably be fixed upon as the date of paying the first instalment. The Post to-night advocates a re-dis-tribution of seats.
With regard to the native meeting at Kopua, the Post says: "The scene is as desperate as it is impolitic; and is at a loss to see why the Ngapuhis should send representatives at all to the meeting unless at intercessors for the Premier."
