. Wednesday. In the oourae of « case against seven of the crew of the. Clan Campbell, charged with refusing to do duty while on the voyage from London, the cook swore that the men had been supplied with flour that was full of excreta of rats and other j offensive matter, and with potatoes that ■melt horribly, and were not fit for pigs' food. He also swore that the captain told them that " if he were going to Africa he would slog it out of them, but as he was going to Wellington he would have to be more careful." The sailors were sentenced to three days' imprisonment, and to forfeit two-days' jJay, as thdy were not justified in refusing duty. The magistrate told them that they had a remedy against the captain for serving out improper provisions. The men intend to take proceedings against the captain. Mr Gisborne and Mr Seymour George, M.H.B.'s., waited on the Hon. J. Ballance with a view of obtaining one thousand pounds for the Westland Board of Educa> tion for building purposes. Mr Ballance promised to accede to the request of the deputation. A motion will be brought before the City Council to call for tenders for their banking. The Colonial Insurance Company sent Mrs Smith ten pounds for her pluck and presence of mind in extinguishing a fire at great risk to herself. An information has been laid by the Collector of Customs against the captain of the s.b. Taiaroa, for over-crowding that vessel. Sir George Grey and Mr Sheehan left by the s.b. Hinemoa this afternoon for the Kawau and Auckland on their way to the great Maori meeting. According to a published statement, Mr Duncan's secured debts amount to £10,738; unsecured, £8,192.
The telegram announcing Sir Julius Vogel's resignation of the Agent General* ship turns out to have been a concoction.
