The Big Pump.
The County Council Refuses the
Offer of the TJ.P.A.
At the conference between the Thames County Council and the Thames Pumping Association to-day, the Association offered four thousand, pounds 'if the Council would" hand over over the securities of the Big Pump. The Council declined the offer, contending thai they could get more as old metal for the plant of the Big Pump, . , ..
The Association said they would not oppose arrangements between the County Council and other mines, whereby the pumping would be continued. The Council will endeavour to induce the Moanatairi, Kurauui Hill, and others to cooperate.
\ Wiliam Crossley, the son of aclejgy* man, was charged with stealing a lady's cloak. He said he had drunk hard all the week. Prisoner was also convicted of stealing a pair of trousers and waistcoat, and was sentenced to three months hard labor for each offence.
The young man from 'Frisco, who laid long odds at the recent races, gave Valueless cheques to the bookmakers for losses to the amount of £370 and then bolted. One of the bookmakers pursued him and compelled him to give up a diamond ring and other jewellery worth £90.
The Herald to-day makes a lame excuse for stealing the bogus special telegram. After having strenuously denied taking these specials, the Herald now admits the theft; but attempts to justify it on the ground that cable messages are common property,

Mr Buckland quotes:—-Hay, 4s to 5s 6d; potatoes, £5 to £5 ss; Californian barley, 3s to 3a 3d; white oats, 3s 3s; black do., 3s ; wheat, 4s 2d.
At Pokeno one hundred head of cattle were yarded yesterday. Yearlings, £3 to £3 10s; two-year-olds, £5; three, £5 15s to £6; dry calves, £5; fat cows, £25. One hundred hides fetched penny farthing to twopence halfpenny; goody threepence farthing to threepence halfpenny; tallow, 27s 6d.
