This day.

Three boys were charged to-day with absconding from the Industrial School. The Inspector of Police showed tnat one boy demoralised the home. The boy repeatedly escaped, and had been ordered to be whipped six time 3, but the regulations required that the punishment should be witnessed by a member of the Committee, and none attended, so that no punishment was inflicted. The Bench dismissed the cases, intimating that they would decline to sentence to punishment in future, unless the Committee would guarantee it should be carried out.

The race between Hutton and Sphinnix for a hundred pounds aside, is not coming off, the backers having withdrawn.

In the third billiard match between representatives of the North and South, the game was closely contested. Tie North again won..

The passengers for the South per the Taiaroa to-day are:■— For New Plymouth —Miss Denham, Messrs Holmes, Mead, Cookaon, Mclvor, Donaldson, and two grooms ; for Nelson—Messrs Engel, J. Grange, and Walker ; for Wellington— Mr Murray ; for Ly ttelton — Messrs Taylor, Holthouse ; for Dunedin—Mr and Mrs Renshaw; for Hokitika—Mr F. J. Watham.

At the Supreme Court John Greenleaf applied for las discharge as a bankrupt.

The c.ischarge was refused, the accounts being unsatisfactory, and the creditors having a suspicion that bankrupt had concealed some of his assets.
