George Hamilton, whose, stack* were recently burnt down, has been arrested on a charge of incendiarism. . : ;p
A most determined attempt: was last night ttade to burn down the furniture shop of H. Fuhrman, Colombo street, by smearing a lot of paper and articles with kerosene, Tarnish etc. The fire fortunately burnt itself outj without doing any damage. " Sale of the Redwood Horses. Baupb, Toiti, and Wainui were passed at 500 guineas each. Sky bird, Fanny and Fair Puritani were passed in at 160 guineas each. Countess was passed in at 75 guineas; (Constance and Shrovetide 100 guineas; Fair Agnes at 300 guineas. A foal by Maroro, out of Toitoi, was bought by Mr Don for 100 guineas. Norseman, Maroro, and Miss Dorrett were sold On account of Mr G. G. Stead, and were bought by Mr Redwood., for /100,; ;200, andtlOO Vguiiieas respectively; Matata, the winner of the Punedin Cup, was sold to H. PrWe atid Cuts for 700 guineas ; and Longlands the winner of the Great Autumn Handicap of 1879 was passed in at 250 guineas. „
Thursday. An explosion of gas ocoarred at a mercantile office today. A jet which lighted the strong room was left burning, and the air becoming exhausted, it went out. A lad who had just come to the office oh> served the smell of gas, and opened the door of the room to allow it to escape. Sufficient time was not, however, allowed when he struck a match and lighted a jet which exploded the gas collected in'the upper part of the room, knocking the boy down and burning the skin on his face. No serious injury was done. The charge of arson against Isidore Schwartz occupied the whole day at the Supreme Court. Seventeen witnesses were examined for the prosecution. It is not unlikely that the trial will last till Friday.
