Friday. One hundred and forty schools are open in Otago, employing 199 males and 131 females, besides eight teachers of sewing. The number of children on the roll at the beginning of the quarter was 14,511; at the end of the quarter 16,754. The average attendance for the preceding quarter was 13,491. Six new schools have been opened during the quarter, mostly in the country districts. John Burgess has been sentenced to six months for placing an obstruction on the Palmerston railway line.
