Thames Harbor Board.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the: Thames Harbor Board was held at the; Council Chambers last erening. Present —The Mayor, Messrs Ehrenfried, Wilson, Bagnall, Osborne, and Brown. I MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. SLtriciNa. A letter was read from Mr C. Tonge, asking permission to sluice on the Beach on allotment shown on plan accompanying; letter in lieu of the allotment he formerly j got permission to sluice on. This letter was allowed to stand over till after the report of the Tailings Committee had been brought up;? SNAGGING APPABATUS. A letter was read from the County Council applying for use of crab winch and jib. The request was acceded to. ; GEAVEI. A letter was received from the Thames Borough Council, asking leave to remove gravel from the foreshore. ! This application was ordered to stand over till after the consideration of the Bye-Laws. TAILINGS. The report of the committee on the above subject was read as follows :— " Your Committee have the honor to report that the removal of tailings from any allotment on the foreshore should only bs granted for a period of six months from a certain date to be fixed. That an upset price for such right of removal from each allotment be fixed by the Board. That the only portion of the foreshore over which the right to remove tailings from be belween the Goods Wharf and the powder magazine. That after such upset price has been fixed such rights should be offered by public_ competition on a certain day, the highest bidder over the upset price to secure such right. The money offered for such rights to be paid before any tailings are removed at all. That a similar plan be adopted for sluicing as recommended for the removal of tailings.—W. Da vies, Chairman." Mr Brown, in supporting the adoptioi of the report, suggested that the portion mentioned be divided into three or four sections, and let as speedily as possible. He believed thousands of pounds worth of gold would be raised off the foreshore, whea the Borough of Thames would profit thereby greatly, as they would get the gold duty. . .;

rnents wore held under the same tenure as the battery allotments. Mr Brown maintained that the Board had not the^ight to rent the allotments to Climo. He thought that a preference had been shown to Climo, and he was going to put a stop to these preferences. The Chairman maintained that the Board had power to lease the allotments. They had not taken rent from Climo, because they were not getting rent from the batteries, and the Board had wished to place them all in the same position. Mr Brown maintained th&t the Board had no right'to leaso theie allotments, when they knew tliey could not get rent for then.

It was resolved that all allotments applied for should have an upset price fixed on them aud then be sold by auction. £

THE SALABIES,

The Mayor moved that the Board resolve itself into a committee of the whole for the purpose of considering the matter of the salaries. The Harbor Master's opinion on the question of>yrfduotion was then taken. He could no? recommend any reduction in the boatmen's salaries, and suggested the removal of the Tararu Wharf, which would effect a considerable saving. After some discussion, the salaries being allowed to remain an at present, it was resolved to'call tenders for the remoral of Tarara Wharf. "■ //". ■:' TOLLS. -- ;.. >, ; The collector of the Burke street wharf tolls waited on the Board to see if they intended to give him any compensation for the loss he had sustained through the diminution of the coal trade consequent on. the stoppage of the pumps.
