a report of the Stockholm Prison Cod* gress.

Great Hurricane at the Islands.

The schooner Albatross, which has arrived from the Islands, brings later news. The Friendly Islands were visited on Thursday the 6th inst. by a terrific hurricane, which did very serious damage. The Roman Catholic Church, valued at £3030, was razed to the ground, as was also the British Consulate, Government store, Baker's store, Goddefroi's copra store, and two others and three native houses. The native schooner Nakau was totally wrecked, and three natives were drowned, in addition to other disasters. The result will be very great destitution in the group, as the cocoanut trees are all stripped. During the height of the gale the glass registered as low as 27.90. The estimated loss in Tonga through the de-

struction of houses is £7000. The Roman Catholic Church, which was only recently built, was a very large and beautifully furnished building.
