CALIFORNIAN TESTIMONIAL TO THE PREMIER.
A casket containing an address to the Earl of Beaconsfield, E.G., from the British residents in California, which is to be presented to his lordship by Mr W. G. Harrison, on behalf of the subscribers to the testimonial, has been left for a few,days in the charge of Messrs ; E. and 8. Garrard and Co., Crown jewel-' lers, 6f the" Haymarket,, and, as the work contains some 1 curious- and interesting specimens, of Califoruian products, it has been sent to Windsor to be viewed by the Queen* and on Wednesday, at. the request of the Prince of Wales, was exhibited at Marlbprough house. The casket which is of oblong form and about 12in. in length, is made entirely from Califorman silver and gold—silver being used for the body, and gold in ornamentations. On one side are the Royal arms in "relief, with mosaic panels of polished gold quarts. The opposite'side'bears a view of the, picturesque and rocky entrance to the h'arbcJur 6f Sari Francisco, named by the early settlers, in allusion to the wealth which they anticipated' would be borue through, it, the Golden Gate. This picture is in relief on chased gold, and is also flanked with quartz panels. At one end in relief 'are represented an English soldier and' a Goorkha, at the other an English sailor add a Sepoy, with the mottoes, " Defence, jaofa Defiance," and " Ready, aye; Ready." The 'lid. is surmounted, by. the, arms, and supporters of Lora jJeacohsfield" done in gold, with mosaic panels similar., to those on the aides, but compos'ed'of cut and polished plates of gold and silver ores and stones found on the Pacific' coast.
