GORE (INVERCARGILL)

Tuesday. The first sod was turned yesterday. Mr Ballance was present. There was a considerable crowd. The Minister arrived at Gore by express train, and | shortly afterwards a special with about forty leading residents of Invercargill. Mr Ballance pulled off his coat, and filled the barrow in a navvy-like style. In his speech he congratulated the company on their enterprise in starting the first railway in New Zealand under the provisions of the District Railway Act. From what he had seen of the country through which the line would pass, he had little doubt that before long the Government woird find it necessary to take the line further. (Cheers.) Mr Ballance, the contractors, and Mr Horace Bastings, who is the company's secretary, and the visitors, then lunched with the members of the company, and the usual congratulatory speeches were made. The train returned to Inreroargill, Mr and Mrs Ballance going up to Gr. M. Belt's. Mr Whitaker, the contractor, expects to finish the line in twelve months. •

This day. Ho Mr Conyers, the doctor says there is a slight feverish reaction, but he can't speak definitely for a few days.
