The Government have formally decided to issue one free pass over the railways of the Colony to each newspaper, with the condition that it is to be used exclusively for reportibg purposes, and with the understanding that it may be cancelled if the privilege is abused. Wellj^gtoa Regatta. To-dayr being anniversary day is observed a* a general holiday. : Beautiful day for the regatta. The attendance is smaller than usual.

Four-oared outrigger race, three entries—The Torpedo, 'Dolly Varden and Wanganui. Dolly, which led, and would apparently have \ron an easy race, was fouled by a Good Templar sailing boat, and so much damaged as to put her out of the race altogether. Torpedo was first by over 100 m. yards,, Wanganui second.

The ships'gig race was won by Hermione, rowing six oars; Neptune second, five oars; Pleiades third, four oars. A protest was entered against the Neptune on the ground that they were not a bona fide crew. ;< Later. The Open Sailing Boat Race was won easily by Toy, and she immediately started off on the Second-class . Yacht Eace, 26 minutes behind. The First-class Yacht Race was a dead gift to Kebbell's Florence, which won the race last year; The others are now here. Seven entries for the Junior Fouroared Eace; won by Torpedo (Wellington boat), Eoclcet (Wellington) second, ten lengths behind. Wanganui declined to row, the water being too rough.

Whaleboat Race, 3 entries—Arawatai, Danger (Wanganui), and Echo. Arawata wpn by three-quarters of a mile. The Echo's stroke broke his oar before they were half way round, and dropped out. The Arawata had a very powerful crew, but Danger apparently was much the best boat. ■•'■■

The, Junior Pair-oared Gig Race was won by Hebe, Venus second. The Ripple and Dart did not come to the scratch.

Tuesday. ■ The journeymen painters are endeavouring to induce masters to join them in their efforts to ; establish a trade protection society. . •..-...- Extensive additions are about to be made by the Government to the old hospital, it being rumored they consider it undesirable to remove it to the new hospital in course of ejection on the Adelaide Road. A microscopical examination of the water supplied by the City Water Works shows that its impurities are dangerous to the public health. In examination the sediment was found to consist largely of dead insects, minute fish, and various t'r jgoid growths, all being considered conducive, to dangerous diseases. The construction of filter beds at the distributing basin is recommended.

A supplementary Gazette issued tonight notifies that the Government of New Zealand will be prepared to receive and forward to Sydney any articles for exhi r bition which may be prepared by persons resident in the colony, and a Royal Commission will be appointed immediately who will prepare and publish regulations under which theywill receive exhibits for transmission. All expenses of transmitting and exhibiting approved articles will be defrayed by the Government. The Collectors of Customs at various ports have beea instructed to receive exhibits and forward them to Chairman of. Exhibition Commission at Wellington, who will transmit them to Sydney, and after the close of the Exhibition the exhibit! will be returned free of expense, or otherwise disposed of at the wish of exhibitors, but the Government will not bo responsible for damage in transit or safe remittance of money. Persons wishing to exhibit should communicate to Dr Hector without delay, as articles should be shipped from Wellington not later than June next.

The 29th of January is proclaimed a bank holiday in the provincial district of Auckland.

In consequence of the Native Minister's reported denial of the truth of the Press Agency telegram from'''Alexandra, the proprietors of the Press Agency sent the following telegram to their Alexandra correspondent :r-" Native Minister states your report about Bewi's negotiations are absolutely without foundation and false in every possible respect.
