COUNTY COUNCIL.
t The usual monthly meeting of the Council was held this afternoon. Present —The Chairman, Crs Bagnall, Carpenter, Deeble, Greenville, Porter, and Thorburn. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. WATER FOB KABAKA CBEBK. A deputation of battery owners and others, headed by Mr J. E. Perry, waited on the Council with reference to the scarcity of water in the Karaka Creek, and the difficulty of getting it. The- Chairman said that the Water Eace Committee would collect evidence and settle the whole matter of the Water Eace. The committee would recommend' what amount of water would he given to each machine. The deputation, as a temporary measure, asked for sufficient water to supply the boilers for the piesent. The Council acceded to request, subject to the approval of the County Surveyor. OUTWABD COBBEBPONDENCE. The letters sent s:nc3 last meeting were read over. i
BEPOBT OF BOABD OF WOBKS, The report of the Boani of Works is as follows:—" That the nitinber of men employed on roads and tracks in the several ridings has been .reduced to the limit fixed at the meeting of the sth December. The work executed during the! month has been principally maintaining and improving existing roads and tracks; Ten natives are now employeidHo&'Tapu road, and will be retained there .ss) the 1 sum authorised by the Hon. the Native Minister has been expended.— j^ltik. Bbodie, Chairman." \-^ \ BBPOET OF WATER EACE COMMITTEB. ' The report of this committee isas follows :—" The contractor for the. tunnel from Waio-Karaka to Waiotahi, not having the specified number of men on the works, was notified by your surveyor (on the ICth December) that he was not carrying on the work in accordance with specification. Since that date the work has been carried on, with .greater energy. But the number now employed is not up, to specification. The total length driven is 290 feet of which about-20d;feet is tim« bered. The trenching for bjrjtnch race to bring the water of. tHe^jMtogakerilceri Creek into the main race isToeing rapidly carried out. Tenders wijl ,once be called for the necessaTy funnelling.-— Alex. Beodib, Chairman:." j BEPOET OF PUMPING ABBANGEMENTS COMMITTEE. ■ ''$%:. ■ "Your Committee have the honor to report that since the last meeting .of Council no tangible offer has been made for the purchase of the U.P.A. securities.: The possibility of the stoppage <5f the.; pump has naturally created some sensation both at the Thames and Auckland. Mr Firth, the Chairman of the Chamber of; Commerce, telegraphed lo the County Chairman, expressing a desire to assist! the Council, but the assistance which: was subsequently offered was of a negative character, as' will be seen by! our reference to the telegram attached.' In order to prevent complication, notice has been given to the directors of the U.P. A: that this Council must not be held liable" for'any expenditure after the Ist proxy (This,timely warning' will enable the manager of the works to make all the, :lrHng«nsents which Your committee can but L express the hope that these expensive and important works will not be permitted to cease, but that a sufficient spirit of enterprise will b v found to exist amongst those companies essentially interested in the;.* con* tinuance, that no stoppage-will occur.— Alex.
