Th* Hon. the Native Minister interviewed Tukukino at Kornata yesterday, but the result is not known. The party returned to Kopu at about four o'clock, where Mr Sheehan, at the request of the Chairman of the Harbour Board, declared the wharf open in the presence of His Worship the Mayor and the gentlemen who had driven out to attend the ceremony. After some little conviviality had been indulged in, Mr Sheehan proceeded to visit Bewi who was too ill to converse with him. On Mr Sbeehan's return to Grahamstown several deputations were awaiting for his arrival, but were postponed till to-day at 4.30. One of these is from the Borough Coun-
oil concerning a number of matters of interest, and one from the volunteers concerning the parade ground. We are glad to hear that the residents of Shortland, especially those residing in Pollen street near Mr Norbury's shop, ( are raising a subscription for the purpose of making a suitable recognition to Constable Haslett for his action in extinguish* ing the fire in Mr Norbury's stable, some weeks back. But for Constable Haslett's promptitude and watchfulness a valuable block of buildings would in all proba- i bility be now in ashes. Tenders have been called for the erection of a "Volunteer Hall at Hamilton, Waikato, to cost about £1000. We really think that when the Waikato, which, as a volunteering district will not bear companion with the Thames, can obtain a good drill hall, there shall be no difficulty in our volunteers, also obtaining a good hall for inspections, etc.
Pooe old Eewi, now lying on his death-bed at Parawai, has always been looked upon as a conservative native of the old school, despising the customs and innovations of the pakeha. However, some time ago, a bailiff had occasion to call at the rangatira's residence for the purpose of getting some papers signed. After the departure of the bailiff, the old man was very much troubled, as he thought thoie who saw the bailiff's visit would think he was in debt, and he was heard to complain very bitterly to his son about it.
Yesterday's Herald states :— " We understand that certain charges have been made against the Kurauui Co's mine manager by a tributer of the mine. The directors have telegraphed for the manager of the mine, and an enquiry will be made into the circumstances." We learn that Messrs Foy Bros., photographers, who have carried on the business here for a number of years, will ■hortly remove to Napier. The tide last night was very high. It flooded several of the Grahamstown footpaths, and several publicans' cellars in low lying portions of the town were inundated. There was a clean sheet at the R.M. Court this morning.
We would draw the attention of the proper authorities to the present dangerous condition of the verandah in front of fiarnett and Levy's old shop, Owen street. The recent gale has caused two of the principal supports to give way, and it is very shaky, and may fall at any time. We understand that the prize firing rules for the Rifle Association meeting to be held in Nelson in Feburary have arrived and may be had from Mr T. Lawless the local secretary. Price 6d each.
