At the meeting of the Borough Council last evening the Borough Valuers reported the completion of the valuation of the town. We have taken a superficial glance at the Valuation 8011, and find that the annual rateable value of property in the Borough for the year 1879-80 is £33,977----while that of last year was £38,563, showing a difference of £5386. At first sight this decrease might appear somewhat alarming, but it will be remembered that last year's valuation included £3954 placed on mining property, which, however, the Judge of the Assessment Court decided could not be recovered, mining property being exempt from taxation. If this £3954 is deducted from the deficit for this year it only leaves a general deficit of £1432. Apropos of this matter it may be of interest to Borough ratepayers to mark the depreciation of property since the incorporation of the municipality, and with that view we subjoin the following statement of the several valuations since that time:— y;
1874-5... 1875-6... 1876-7 .. 1877-8... 1878-9.;. 1879-80 £. A. d. ... 62,560 15 0 ... 46,260 10 0 ... 46,674 0 0 ... 39,560 0 0 ... 38,563 0 0 ... 33,977 0 0
