Ws would again call attention to the .question of removing the dangerous obstructions to navigation in the Upper Thames. Now that the river is low there are many sunken snags that should be marked and removed without delay. Those which are always visible might be left for the last. Was not a sum of money voted for the purpose last session? Mr Firth, we believe, is carrying on snagging operations in the neighborhood of Mata Mata at his own expense, but there are many miles of the river from the Ohinemuri junction upwards which are in a very dangerous condition. There, are no less than four small steamers' employed on that portion of the river, two of which have been disabled seriously owing to the neglect of the proper authorities to improve the navigation. Losses of this nature are very prejudicial to private enterprise, which may be safely trusted to develop an important traffic. Let the Government ace to this at once; the energy and capital of our settlers will do the rest.
