Thames Annual Races.
First Day. The following is the conclusion of our report of the races yesterday:— - . THUD BACK. Maobi Hobsj Race; 5 soys.: Distance, two miles; post:entry,.los. . Mr Young effected a good start, the favorite leading for the first two rounds. 'The distance was evidently too long for him, as on the third round he was passed by Cannibal and Christina, the former coming in winner by abeut a length. Then ensued a great amount 'of argument amongst the dusky proprietors of the horses, and a number of protests-were i made, so that the stewards decided that the horses should run another l£ miles for the prize. All the horses except Merriman s pony came to the scratch, and after an exciting race Cannibal (ridden by Bitchie) came in first, with Christina second. * FOUBTH BACK. The other horses got orer the first hurdle, but several baulked again, at the next. Government and Hurricane were at this time taking their hurdles well, Hurricane gradually gaining grolind,. but not sufficient .to. prevent Government winning, which he did amidst loud applause. Peter was third.. Silver tail's jockey, Rogers, was thrown, and Peter tell. Young de Thierry, however, man* fully kept his seat, got his horse on its legs, and finished the distance., . "* FIFTH BACE. Hackßacb: Post, entries, 10s; distance, f mile. Byer's Deception 1 Hoara Tareranui's Quarry 2 McGregor's Cleopatra 0 Buckley's Fan ... 0 Considerable difficulty was experienced in getting entries for this race, when it was known that Deception was entered. It was evident from the commencement that Deception would win, which he did by a length, Quarry being second. Kitchie rode the winner splendidly. This concluded the day's racing, and soon the course was deserted. There was a large number in the Gardens during the day which acted as a natural grand stand.
