Two men named Richard Byone and Henry Brown were capsized in a boat at Kaipara Eiver and drowned.

The colt jumped away with the lead, Isaac second, Pinfire third, and Xantippe last. This order was maintained through cutting and into straight to dip, where Pinfire went forward with a tremendous rush, beating Walters' colt cleverly in the post, Isaac a good third. Betting—Six to four against Isaac and Slander (colt), two to one against Pinfire, fire to one against Xantippe. TimeOne minute nineteen seconds. Distance, threequarters of a mile. Seven horses started for the Cup. Auckland Cup Handicap of 300 soys ; sweepstakes of 15 soys each added, second horse to receive 36 soys out of the stakes; 2£ miles. Ariel ... 1 Gillie Callum 2 The Don ... ...... 3 This was a splendid race. Pungawerewere led for a mile and a half and was then passed by Ariel and The Don. Coming into the straight Gillie Callum came up, and the three ran together some distance. Ariel gradually went ahead and won by two lengths. Don a good third. Time, four minutes twenty-one seconds.
