CRICKET.
T.C.C. v. U.C.C.
This cricket match came off on Saturday, and excited a good deal of interest amongst lovers of the noble game. The Union Club since its formation' some two or three months ago, has • made great progress, and both morning and evening practices have been going on daily for some weeks pant. They were thus more of a match for the older club than the first time they tried conclusions with i their second eleven. Betting, however, was in favor of the Thames Cricket Club. At 2 o'clock wickets were pitched, and Mr McMillan, Captain of the Union, having won the toss, decided on putting his opponents in, and Whitford and Lawless went to the wickets to the bowling of Clark and Harrison, but they were both quickly disposed of for a couple a-piece, Whitford being run out, and Lawless caught out by Williams. Smeaton made 13 runs, when he was stumped by Boxall, and Hargreaves ran up 8 before he was bowled and caught by the Union Captain, whose medium-paced bowling it was found difficult to play. Burgess and Spencer made good stands, but to T. Murphy belongs the honor of making the' highest score of the day—24. Waddington played a pretty innings for 19, making one drive for 7. The remainder were disposed of for small scores. The Union boys then Went to bat, McMillan and Gribble facing the bowling of Spencer and Whitford, but they were both clean bowled for small scores, and in fact the most of the team went out for single figures, J. Smith alone scoring 19, which he made with very good play. At six o'clock the wickets were drawn with two men to go in, and the match will be finished next Saturday; A feature of the match especially remarked was the excellent fielding of th» Union
Club, Hamilton being very good. The bowling of Boxall might have considerably lessened tlio total of the Thames score bad he been put on sooner. Harrison was out of form, and consequently his bowling and fielding were not so effective as usual. The following were the scores: — T.C.C.
