DUNEDIN.
Thursday. In consequence of the large number of small fires which hare recently happened in this province insurance companies have resolved to reinstate the buildings instead of paying the premiums. A testimonial is to be presented to R. H. Leary on the occasion of his retiring from the position of Mayor of Dunedin. A deputation from the City Council waited on Mr Macandrew to-day with reference to establishing a public market for, Dunedin. They represented that the cost would be from £20,000 to £30,000, and wished to know if the Government would be in favor of the Council leasing the southern market reserve-to a company which would be willing to establish a market. Mr Macandrew said he bad no objection provided the;publie interest would be protected. In reply to a deputation from Port Chalmers he said there would soon be a sufficient supply of trucks, as contracts for 2,000 were out.
At a meeting of the Education Board to-day a letter from Mr Hislop was read stating; that the Government had allotted Otago £19,000 out the £100,000 voted for school buildings. The secretary was instructed to communicate to the Government the reply of the Board, that they regretted a larger' sum could not be allotted to Otago. , The wrestling match for £100 between Thomas, champion of Victoria, andDagg, of Otago, took place on the Caledonian Grounds to-day, in the presence of about 1,000 people. Dagg is taller, and about a stone heavier thaa the Victorian, and had many" backers, but, the betting was in favour of Thomas. Both were loudly cheered when they made their appearance in the ring. As soon as they closed for the first round it was apparent that Dagg -was over-matched, and that though he was heavier he did not possess either the muscular power or skill of the Victorian Champion. The contest was a hollow affair, as Thomas threw Dagg three timei in succession without much difficulty, and as he thus scored the best three oat of five 'he was declared a winner. He wrestles Tyson, 1 the champion of Otago,. December Bth, but it is supposed that ho will beat him easily. -
