This day. The Times lays the Royal Commission to inquire into the condition of collegiate or higher and secondary education, and the relation of both to the common school education of the colony, is composed of the following gentlemen :—J. The Director of Geological Survey, Dr. Hector,"who is one of Mr Sheehan's party, will, if possible, work his way through to the Waikatb, in order to gather information as to the geology of a comparatively unexplored part of the colony. Mr Wood, who was charged with putting his lunatic sister under restraint for so many years, was brought up at the R.M. Court this morning. The case will occupy a considerable time. _ .:;■:': : , The Government have invited the Wellington Benevolent Institution to take over charge of all charitable institutions nn the city, but the committee have decided not to entertain the proposal. Mr Henry Brett, of Auckland has been gazetted a Justice of the Peace for the Colony. ; Thursday* The Court of Appeal has got through the cause list, so far as argument is. concerned, but has yet to give a number of judgments, for which purpose the Court will sit on Monday. To-day a couple of Crown cases from Canterbury were reserved by Judge Johnston for the opinion of the Court. In one instance a man will be charged with having fired at another with a revolver. The jury could not find that it was a revolver as the weapon was not seen. The question was, whether, as the word revolver had been mentioned in the indictment, failure to :• prove that a revolver was used vitiated the connection. The Court held that the word " revolver *' supensage (?) therefore that proof was not necessary, and the con* viction stands. In another case a man had been convicted of embezzlement, and after sentence a point arose as to whether certain technicalities had been complied with. The Court held that as the present bad not been taken until after the trial was complete jurisdiction was ousted.
