It is stated that a movement is on foot for the establishment of a new Land and Investment Company on a similar, basis to the present Wellington Trust, Loan and Investment Company. The proposed capital is £100,000. The operations of the association would be confined.chiefly to the Wellington Provincial District. Of 68 immigrants who arrived from Nelson, ex Edwin Fox, about half have
been sent to Wangariui. The remainder, with one or two exceptions, remain at Wellington. The inward .'Frisco mail for Wellington consisted of 3,912 letters, 825 book packets, 10,150 newspapers from Europe ; 265 letters, 112; book packets, and 710 newspapers from America. . The Chronicle says, regarding the construction of the Hutt-Foxton Railway.it is the intention of the Minister for Public Works to commence at once, and action in that direction w? 11 be taken before the end of the year. Some • doubts arose about the question of native title, and the Native Minister has carefully,inquired into the position of existing negotiations for the acquirement of the land over which the line must pass.. It is believed ail obstacles in the way of completing these negotiations will be overcome, and the necessary land will pass into the hands of Government. >
It is.said that the Government will make known in a day or two what they, intend to do in regard to the petition some time ago presented in favour of O'Connor, sentenced for attempted poisoning. The Native Minister left for Taranaki to-day per Stella. ; < •
