The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1878.

If the Thames cannot yet compete with the other parts of the Provincial District in the several classes of exhibits which take precedence at agricultural shows, in "local manufactures" our exhibits generally compare favorably with others which may he sent. At the recent show of the Auckland Agricultural Society the proprietor of the Phoenix Brewery took several prizes for his ales and porter in bulk and bottle; and we have not a doubt that had Mr Dann, for instance, sent some specimens of his furniture, or Messrs Mennie and Dey exhibits of their unrivalled biscuits, they would have secured honorable places in the prize schedule. We mention these only as representatives of their lines; probably there are many others who could have made a very respectable show, and carried off prizes for other local manufactures. The Auckland Star gives the following awards in the beer exhibits, and we can congratulate Mr Ehrenfried on the result :— " Beee.—Ale not less than 5 gallons.—L. Ehrenfried's XXX ale, Ist prize; Hancock and Co., brewed May 20,1878,2s 6d Ser gallon, 2nd prize. Porter, same conitions.—L. Ehrenfried, Ist prize XXX. Ale, in bottles (2 dozen). —James McCormick (brewed by Marshall and Copeland, Dunedin, and bottled by exhibitor), 10a per dozen, Ist prize; L. Ehrenfried, 2nd prize. Porter, in bottles (2 dozen).—L. Ehrenfried, Ist prize; James McComish (brewed by Marshall and Copeland, Dunedin, and bottled by exhibitor), 10s per dozen, 2nd prize. This part of the show was well patronised during the day, and the numerous (asters expressed the highest encomiums upon the prize ale and porter." ___
