SUICIDE OF CAPT. HENRY GOLDSMITH.
On Saturday night, between the hours of eight and nine o'clock, the appalling discovery was made that Captain Goldsmith, Mining Inspector for the Hauraki District, had committed suicide at his residence on the Beach, between Albert and Williamsba streets. The deceased had not been seen since Friday, 25th ultimo, but as he had said that he wag going to Auckland for a few days, no uneasiness was felt at his absence, especially as he was a member of the Grand Lodge for the North Island of Scottish Masonry, whose quarterly communication took place on Thursday last. When the brethren who had been in attendance returned on Friday, and it was elicited that Captain Goldsmith had not been seen in town, his absence was remarked as singular. The discovery of his body was made by Mr Sub-Inspector Bullen and Detective Brennan on Saturday night, and all the particulars calculated to throw any light on the pad affair were elicited at an inquest to-day, as given below. , . . ;
