GISBORNE.

This day. A smart shock of earthquake occurred at half-past one this morning. The Taupo was off Tolago Buy at the time and felt the shock severely. There was great alarm amongst the passengers, who thought the ship had struck a reef. Captain Heale and others on board assign the earthquake as the cause of similar effects which were experienced recently by the steamer Pretty Jane while on her way to Auckland.
