RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THIS DAY. (Before W. Fraser, Esq., 8.M.) BOWDTISM. John Edwards and Charles Baker, two sailors,, were charged with fighting in a public place this morning. The defendants pleaded guilty. Edwards, who wai punished for drunkenness and indecent language yesterday, was fined 40s and costs, or 7 days' imprisonment, and Baker 20s and costs, or 3 days' imprisonment. ANOTHEB CASE. Thomas Boyle, Henry Kemp and James Hicks were charged with behaving in such a manner in a public place that a breach of the peace was occasioned. -■ ' Defendants pleaded not guilty. Thomas Manning, sworn, deposed—l reside in Baillie street and know the Willoughby Hotel kept by Mr Tregonning. On the day in question I recollect being sent for and on going to the hotel I found the defendants quarrelling. Hicks had, blood on his face but he had that before the quarrel. I tried to stop the row, and turned Boyle out of the bouse and kept the others back. I did not see any blows struck. Bichard Tregonning, sworn, deposed— I am the licensee of the Willoughby Hotel. On the 23rd inst. Boyle-came to my hotel, and shortly after the other two came in the worse of liquor. An argument was started between Boyle and the two others, and they started to quarrel. I was sick, and sent for Manning; to suppress the row, which he did. Constable Day, sworn, deposed—My assistance was called in to suppress a disturbance in the Willoughby Hotel. I found the three defendants at the back |

of the hotel. Kemp and Hicks were the worse of liqaor, and Hicks was stripped for fighting. Boyle told me he had had a row with Hicks and Kemp. His Worship discharged Boyle, and fined the other two defendants 40s and costs, or in default seven days' imprisonment.'', ...■' \ ■■'".. . ■ " ■■ DISCHARGING CRACKEBS. Edward Kneebone" and Henry James, two small boys were charged with unlawfully discharging explosive material in a public place, to wit Pollen street, on the 28th inst. Defendants tremblingly admitted the offence. Discharged with a caution. Court adjourned.
