BALCLUTHA.
Saturday. At a meeting of the Clutha County Council held yesterday a deputation from the Borough Council attended to request assistance in re-establishing the part where the bridge was washed away. T.he Council agreed to pay one-third of the cost, and voted four hundred pounds for the purpose. It is believed that the Bruce Borough Council will pay the other twothirds. The Council has voted in all nearly five thousand pounds at present for new works. The Borough Council are energetically repairing the main street, so that traffic may be resumed, and the Government are pushing on the repairs of the railway line. It is expected the trains will get as far as Renfrew at the beginning of the week, but it will take months to get the station yards repaired, railway bridge planked, and viaducts. These are being planked for foot passengers. The river banks behind the township are washing away at a most alarming rate. If the present flood continues for a month buildings in the township will be reached, and unless protective works be at once undertaken the township will have to be abandoned. The ground yet being washed away is private property, and the Borough Council cannot act because they have not the necessary funds. The position of the whole matter is causing wellgrounded alarm.
