Council Chambers, Thames.

.., .". - ;<y 24th October, 1878. . SiyjT-.l.hare the honor to suggest, that see* ing many cases similar to Mrs Laird's, (retfwrwd to in my report of this day> are;tiow occurring within the District of Thames,,and that the mothers and children will be thrown on the Borough fuuds for 1 support, that a spebtai'committee of the Council should consider means whereby the mothers could be oarsd for and places of service found for them, j and the children cared for, removed from the society ..pf.bad,friends, and enab'cd,tf> ,grow up - members of society.»"it it impossible for me to obtain domestic situa> tions >or those sufficiently old; or to find houses for "children where such reclamation ■would be eff;?ti-d. A. house for bhildtdn might be established at the Thames, and if so, than if the ladies of the Thames will aid in obtaining situations for those grown up, like is aone in all large centres of population, a great future evil and a vast amount of crime 1 -and, misery will be averted from the Thames 1. My suggestion is that year Worship and* ihe Council would ask the ladies of the Thames to meet them and consider some means to bring to, an issue a plan whereby* the nresent expenditure of the Council-will do more good than at present.—l have, Ac.,' : ■•' '■' ■'*' John B. Mason, Believing Officer. To His Worship the Mayor,, Thames.; Cr Speight said that the whole matter of charitable aid was in.such, an unsatisfactory state that. they did not know which way.tp,(aoe it. He,, thought some definite system should be adppted. £It was a question of great importance. The Mayor admitted that thin question 'was of great; importance, andsosoon as the session was over; and he caw what 'the Government, intended to do, he intended to look' into the matter with a ; view to placing it on a satisfactory basis. . Cr McGowan pointed out that they were in a much better condition now that , the ppor ; relief was administered locally than hitherto. ""„!.........

Cr Speight said that they should take ev.ery;means in^ their power to make, tiie 6 '5r charitable aid which should be a colonial msfter. Either of the alternatives "given "to the Borough by the Government were unjust. ?The Mayor said that, as soonjti th^ Government took over the Charitable Institutions their (the Borough's) subsidies would cease. At pressnt the Borough hnd lo sap^ortthe, whole poo;> of the distrxi. They Mdnieipal Conference should have atfendedib that.
