By direction of tbe**Mayor, the child ac the Spit supposed to be suffering from small-pox was examined on Sunday by Doctors Spencer and Hitchingß, who have sent in the following repiTt to the Town Clerk :—" Sir, —in accordance with the request of .Hi Worship, the Chairman of th.« Local JJourd of Health, we beg to inform you thut we have to- j day examined the child at the JSpit, stated to bo suffering from smallpox anil to report as follows : — The child, a boy of the name of Hush, four years of at;<\ I.as had an eruption on the face, a portion of the chest, and one wrist, for. the-last eleven days. The eruption \n now nearly well, the only re: mains being a peeling of the cuticle, so that we are not prepared to state definitely its tru.' nature. We are prepared, however, lo give our opinion that it is not Smallpox, for .the following reasons :—(1.) The child bears marks of successful vaccination. (2) We have been unable to asc3rtain any possible source of contagion. (3.) The history, symptoms, and duration of the case are at variance with those of smallpox. (4) The appearance of the affected portions of skin is not that of the last stage of smallpox.—We have the honor, &o.; T. Hitchings, W. J. Spencer."
