Thames Harbor Board.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board was held last evening. Present— The Chairman, the Mayor, Messrs Bagnail, Mennie, Gibbons and Price. MINCTEB. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. DBEDGE. . A letter was read from the Under* Secretary for Public Works stating that the Government had not the plans, etc., of the American dredging system, but the Board could procure all particulars from America. SIE JOHN COODE. With reference to some information re the prices of materials for Sir John Coode's guidance, Messrs Price and Gibbons were appointed a committee to collect the information. ,; ;'■■-'. • WHARFINGER. ' "■ A letter was received from Mr C. E. Bull stating that as he understood Mr C. H. J. Hill was leaving the place he applied for the situation. "* " ' The Chairman stated that the Board had received no notice of Mr Hill's intention to leave the employ of the Board, and he understood that Mr Hill had received no official notice of his appointment as Banger to Crown Lands yet. contractor's application. Tbe contractor for the silt retaining works wrote the Board stating that by the present method he would not be able to complete the work within the specified time, and suggested that an arrangement be come to . whereby, the mullopk might be delivered at the wharf, and the work could be more expeditiously proceeded with than at present. After some discussion the matter was referred to the committee already appointed to look after this matter. DREDGE PUNTS. The Chairman said he was getting plans prepared for two dredging punts on the side-opening principle. He thought a hand dredging apparatus would be sufficient for the present, and suggested .the appointment of a committee to approve of plans and call for tenders. Messrs Bagnall, Price, Mennie and the Chairman were appointed a committee re this matter. THE PROPOSED GRIDIRON. The report of the Engineer on this matter was read. It showed that the cost of a gridiron at Shortland would be £1200 and at Grahamstown £400. The large cost of the one at Shorthand was in consequence of the bad foundation. The consideration of the matter was deferred till next meeting. ADDITIONAL SILT RETAINING WORKS. On the motion of Mr Mennie, seconded by Mr Price, it was decided to construct an additional 20 chains of silt retaining works.
... v, A LITTLE TIFF. , Mr Price said that some days ago the Chairman, Mr Mennie and himself had a conversation about the men employed by the Board, and as it was considered desirable to employ as.many of the married men as possible, he had mentioned that a certain man was a single msj. This person was discharged, and he had come to the speaker and accused him of causing him to get the sack, and used the very words he had used. Now some one had been guilty of a gross breach of confidence in informing the man the purport of a private conversation.
The Caairman said he knew. Mr Price was referring to him, bat he could assure him that he knew nothing about it. He was prepared to give £5 to the Hospital if Mr Price could produce ihe man, and state tha, he (the Chairman) was the informant.
The discussion then lapsed. This was all the business.
