The County Chairman, County Engineer, and a, representative of this paper visited Karaka Creek to-day with a view to ascertaining requirements therein of mine and battery owners. The Naval Cadets competed to-day for their medal and several other money prizes. 'The highest scores made by the moaning squad were—Cadet Moore, 31 ; Cade* Penk, 27; P.O. Pick, 25. Cricket is in full swing in the South. What a:*3 the l more favored Northerners doing that they have not yet been able to open the season P Cricket ought to be at least a month earlier in Auckland than, in Otago or Canterbury. We understand that the Naval gun boat will leave Grahamstown Wharf at two p.m. to-morrow, under charge of a Lieutenant, to. bring up some of the company's men from •Coromandel. We believe that some half-dozen hon. members will avail themselves of the opportunity to viiit Coromandel. The Wajmate Sergeant of Police was burnt in effigy in that township recently. The local paper says:—When the streets had been dply pura'ded, a quantity of kerosene was poured over the unfortunate lay-figure, and then set fire to, and as the flames rose from the dummy, the enthusiasm of the" larrikins "and some small boys was tremendous.. The Wellington Post states tliat Captain Power, of the Thames, who is at pre- . sent in Wellington, ia acting, temporarily! as organist in .the Cathedral Church of St. Paul's and gives marked satisfaction. The first number of the Hauraki Tribune, a new journal intended for circulation in the Ohinemuvi District, wrs issued to day. It is a small foolscap sheet,-and, as announced in the prospectus, will be published " occasionally, or bftener if possible." 4 Mr 0. R Mibhell is the happy proprietor.
