THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O' CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1878.

We commend to the notice of our readers the interesting report of the proceedings of the County Council meeting held yesterday. The various measures introduced and the decisions arrived at are fraught with importance to the inhabitants of the Thames, and exhibit en earnest desire on the'part of our looc.l rulers to devise the best means t) enable us xo tide orer ourpresent depression, and to prevent a recurrence of the seme in the future. Every right-thinking man will approve

the wise suggestion to carry on the projected Public Works simultaneously with the throwing open of, the land* under, the deferred payment-system. This is what the Thames people have long been clamoring for, and thero now appears a fair prospect of their wishes being gratified. The resolution regarding the maintenance of the Waio-Karaka Pomps appears to be the right solution of the difficulty, and we have no doubt when the, matter is proi perly placed before the Government, in that peculiar manner which is characteristic of the County Council, aid will be forthcoming from the, source indicated in the resolution. Our limited * space will not permit fus to consider the various measures'; in detail. We will, therefore, content ourselves with reiterating the statement, that they have been devised in the interests of the community, sndif the programme be faithfully ad-' hered toj it will confer incalculable benefit on this community. The meed of praise to the County Chairman, for his exertious in Wellington, was well merited, and we cordially endorse the opinions expressed by the mover and seconder of the resolution.
