Wednesday. Mr Wakefield gave notice for the recommittal of the Land Tax Bill. THE DISMISSAL OF MAGISTEATES. Mr Fox moved for a committee to inquire into the dismissal of Major G. Mair and Mr Searancke.... Mr Fox spoke at some length urging the reasonableness of the request, and claims of these officers on the country, and pointed oat how the Premier said the Government would not shirk inquiry, while the Native Minister objected to any investigation. The Hon. J. Sheehan replied at con* siderable length, and went into details to show that his ac ion had been justified in the public interest, and the dismissed ... ■'■..■'. ;■ .... ' •. officers had not shown that zeal and enthusiasm in the objects and desires of the Government they had a right to expect. He saw no reason to change the views he expressed in his Native Affairs Statement, and again asked the House to assist him in defeating the motion. ■ Mr Fox replied to the motion, and it was negatived by 47 against 22. PUBLIC WOBKS CONTRIBUTIONS. The remainder of the sitting was occupied in discussing Mr Saunders' motion, that districts receiving no benefit from the Public Works scheme should be exempted from all contributions to public works. The mover spoke at some length in "Urging his motion on the House. The Attorney - General opposed the motion, and spoke until 5.30. "BEADY-MONEY" BOMNSON FINED £50. In the Legislative Council the Hon. Mr Robinson was fined £50 for contempt in absenting himself from the Council without leave. . On the House resuming at 7.30 this evening, the orders of the day were gone on with, but till 10 o'clock the whole of the business was of a private character, and deficient of general public interest. This day. •The greater pqrtion of last night's sitting in the House was in committee on various biUs, and continued till one o'clock, when an adjournment took place. Nothing contained in the bills was of much general interest.
