The: pleasure trip i undertaken lyesterday by the Governor, Members of Parliament and others, to celebrate the connection of Christchurch with Dunedin by. rail, appears to have been performed with* put any mishap to detract/from the day's enjoyment. The occasion was ah important one, and from one end of the comparatively long journey to the other the inhabitants seem to have so regarded it, for at every place on the line the travel] •leri were received with acclamation. His Excellency the Governor was " ad* dressed" by civic dignitaries at every city and borough, and "refreshments" were provided at every point 'i The scene in Dunedin at the close of the long day's journey must have been inspiriting. "We can imagine some of the Northern visitors being a little surprised if- they have not seen Dunedin before, or during the last ten years. One feature in] the proceedings connected with this .trip deserves mention. It is that fhe services of Sir Julius Vogel to the Colony were every where cognised } and although new claimants for the* honor of originating the Public Works Scheme are springing up, all are agreed in giving the lion' 4 share of credit to the' absent one. To his scheme Canterbury and Otago are mainly indebted for their prosperity,^ and the facilities they now. enjoy for promoting- commerce, not the least of which is the unbroken line of railway from one capital to the other bo auspiciously opened yesterday. .
