NELSON.
' Wednesday. A crow Jed meeting, of town and country people was held last night to consider the Public Works Statement, Mr Barnicoat in the chair. Speeches were made showing how faith had been broke.n'with Nelson in the matter of the West Coast railway. The following resolutions were past unanimously :—'.' That the essence of the public works policy was the construction of a main trunk line through both Islands, and the people of Nelson supported the policy on that ground, and of successive Governments, and by the Bail way Act, 1879, the line from Nelson to the West Coast, and then to 'Canterbury, was recognised as part of the main trunk line." It was moved by Mr Shep? hard, and seconded by the Bishop of Nelsou, "That, under the scheme now proposed to fill up the other gaps in the t:..jak system, tile construction of a l rthern part or the main line in the
Ji_iddie Island is indefinitely postponed, ■'.:' the injury of the people resident in 1 olson and Marlborough. That this taceting views with the utmost alarm the proposal of the Government to entirely exclude this district from all participation in the new works to be undertaken within the next five years, &c." ■'■ '•
