RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THIS DAY. (Before W. Fraser, Esq., Warden. DBUNKENNESS.

One person was charged with this offence, and was fined 10s and costs, or 24 hours' imprisonment.

Opera (a Native) was charged with stealing one bottle of brandy last night from the Warwick Arms Hotel.

Defendant, through Mr Frank Puckey, said he was drunk at the time, and did not know whether the charge was correct or not.

Hugh Mcllhone, sworn, deposed—l am licensee of the Warwick Arms Hotel. During last Evening a purchaser purchased a bottle of brandy, and it remained in the bar waiting for him. The bar was closed, but could have been entered by means of the sitting room. I saw the defendant coming from the bar with something under his coat, and I found, this bottle of brandy (produced) under it. I searched for the brandy I had left for the customer, and found it missing. It had been there immediately before. Defendant denied knowing anything about it. I sold it for 6s. By defendant—There were three persons in the bar when I saw you there. Constable Haslett deposed that on being called by Mr Mcllhone he found the defendant with the brandy under his coat. He was not drunk, and did not speak.

By defendant—You were not drunk. Sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labor.

OBSCENITY.

Mary Anne Beddock and Elizabeth Birdwood were charged with using indecent and obscene language in a public place, to wit, Mackay street, Thamee, last night.

The defendant Beddock pleaded not guilty, ,and Birdwood admitted the offence. :': f«?., ■ Constable Baldwin, sworn, deposed— lam stationed at Shortland. I. was on duty in Pollen street at about a quarter to 12 last night and heard a noise in Mackay street.. I proceeded to where the n,oise came from, and found the defendant Birdwood lying on the footpath outside her house, drunk. Beddock was inside with a man named Fitzgerald.
