Reported Foundering of the s.s. Pearl.

At an early hoar,this morning a painful rumor was afloat in Shortland to the effect that the steamer Pearl, which had left the Shorthand wharf at 6 o'clock this morning for the Piako, h&d capsized, or some similar catastrophe' had happened to her. The weather at';'. this time was terrific, and vthe Te Aroha steamer; which started for Ohinemuri, had to put back till the weather moderated. Mr C. F. Mitchell, one of those who felt confident that the Pearl had gone down, after trying to get a boat to go out, at last started off to Captain Wildman's residence, and requested that the gun boat should-be sent out, as it was too rough for any other craft. Mr Mitchell's request was immediately complied with, and smartly so, for 20 minutes or so afterwards Lieut. Bennett, with Petty Officers Brown and Savage, was under weigh in the gun boat, and made -for the. Piako river. After cruising about the gun boat ran into the mouth of the Piako, and back to , the Kauaeranga, when the crew came 1 ashore soused to the skin. Shortly after she had left the wharf, however, the fear of an accident to the Pearl was, abated by the news thai Captain Burningham, the owner, had seen her safely enter the mouth of the Piako. ;,
