"Thames" New School.

We hare teen the plans, &c, ofj the new school to accommodate the children now meeting in what has been knowji as " Thames " school. ' The new buildiqg is to be erected on the. .triangular piecs of gronnd bounded on two sides by Cochrane and Campbell streets, which has lately been filled up at' considerable expense to a proper lerel with mullock from the mine tips. The new school will hare a frontage of 120 feet/ the centre portion being 72 feet long, with, a porch 11 feet by. 7 feet. This building is supported by two wings, projecting 24 feet, f the front gable of each having a large Venetian window. The entrance porch leads into a main hall or passage, eight '• feet wide and 22 feet long, extending, also right and left so as communicate with the different parts of, the building. Immediately on entering on the left and right are the Master's and teachers' rooms,, each 14 feet six inches by 16 feet, and ad--1 joining these again are the lavatories and i cloak rooms, one at either end. These I will contain " horses" for cloaks and i caps, and basins, with water hid on.; At i the centre of the building running back is a large junior class room, 40 feet by 22 feet, with ' a gallery on the right side to accommodate 72 children; The wings are each divided into two classrooms, each room being 40 feet by 22 feet, with fireplace in each.' The junior class room is also provided with fireplace. There is a belfry rising from the centre of the building, in which will be placed a bell to call the children to school. At the back there are to be two wide verandah sheds for the children to take exercise in during bad weather. The. blocks are to be of pnriri, and all the timbers except some lining boards and partitions heart of kauri. All the necessary officesl are provided for; with water laid on where required. Gas is also to be laid on to the hall, cloak rooms, master's and teachers' rooms, and the two front schoolrooms. To provide for drainage 160 feet of 6-inch and 320 feet of 4 inch glazed earthenware socket pipes are to be laid down at. such depth as may be required, embedded in clay, and connected by such joints, corners, Ac, as may be required. The building is to be well ventilated, and painted, the • ground fenced and, levelled, and indeed nothing seems to have been omitted which could conduce.to make the school all that could be desired, and it will afford ample accommodation for, we should say, four or five hundred children. The plans and specifications have been sent down for-the inspection of the Waiotahi School Committee, and it is understood that the work will be proceeded with out of the first money at the disposal of the Board of Education. The building will be quite an ornament to the town, when erected, and it will very much conduce to the comfort of the teachers and scholars now attending the Thames

School. We believe it has not yet been decided where the front of the building will be, but probably it will be so placed on the ground as to give a view of the front elevation from Pollen Street.
