Academy of Music.

At the Academy of Music on Saturday evening Mr Lytton Sothern, assisted by the amateurs through whose assistance he had been able to produce " Our American Cousin," appeared in the fine comedy of " David Garrick," sustaining the title role. Considering the circumstances under which it was produced, with but little time for rehearsal or study of the parts, the amateurs acquitted themselves very creditably. As David Garrick Mr Sothern played with great care, and in the scene where he simulates drunkenness to cure the daughter of the rich city merchant of her infatuation .for himself, he was especially good, his occasional outbursts of passion when he forgot his part only rendering his acting of the drunkard more conspicuously natural. He was very well supported by Miss Laura Wiseman as Ada Ingot. Mr T. A. Bell, Mr S. Young, Mr P. J. Burgess and Mr Blake did justice to their short drilling in their several parts, while Mrs W. H. Eeed and Miss Mason filled their respective roles respectably. Mr Sotbern was several times warmly applauded, and at the" close received with Miss Wiseman a Mattering call and reception before the curtain. The performance concluded with a concert, to which the ladies playing in the piece, Miss Hunter and Mr P. A. Pulleine contributed, all being encored. The gem of the vocalization was certainly the air from " Maritana" " Scenes that are Brightest," by Mrs W. H. Eeed. The attendance was not so good as might have been expected on a "Saturday night.
