Very successful experiments have been tried with the microphone. It magnified sound to a remarkable extent.
At a sale to-day 28 acres of Dean's estate, fronting Hag ley Park, about a mile from the centre of the city, realised £25,185. Some of the quarter-acres sold for £430.
I , This day. The Government land sales on Monday and Tuesday realised over £5000.
The Eangitata railway bridge caught fire yesterday, but not much damaged. It is sjpposed to have been caused by a spark from the engine.
The benefit to Mr Hoskins, in honor of hiß forty - first professional anniversary, took place at the Theatre Royal last night. It was a grand success. There was a large and briliant audience. Mr Hoskins received a perfect ovation, and during the interlude was presented by Sir Cracroft Wilson with a cheque for £200, raised by public subscriptions and by members of the theatrical company, with a gold chronograph watch, costing sixty guineas.
