New Caledonia News.

(PEB S.B. HERO.)

(Pee Pbess Agency.)

Auckland, This day.

The troops after destroying a village were upon their return to camp attacked by about two hundred and fifty to three hundred natives at Bbularpari. Awaiting for place sufficiently open to afford a chance of seeing the savages, the troops kept on, then suddenly turned round, and fifteen blacks bit the dust; how many more were wounded is unknown, for the rebels disappeared in the thick scrub as though by magic. To-morrow much is hoped for from an expedition to be made against the insurgents by Canala tribes, assisted by soldiers. Everything remains quiet in all parts of the Island except the scene" of revolt, and there operations are circumscribed to a very small area. The attack organised yesterday resulted in the destruction of Tillages only, the natives fleeing amongst the mountains. Many people express surprise that more is not yet achieved against the insurgents. Not so those who come from the scene of action and are well acquainted with the country and its black population. These better informed know the tedious process. Starvation and black against black are the means which must be depended upon for the reduction of this handful of agile devils, who leap from rock to rook, dive into the friendly covering of thick tangled bush by paths known to themselves only, or disappear in numerous ravines worn in the mountain sides by rains. Up to the latest moment the number of v known victims m the late revolt is 118.

The latest despatch of 15th July says; an ambuscade succeeded against the revolted tribes and killed a son of the chief and several others; and burnt and destroyed in tie last day or two twenty more villages. Yesterday! some natives bearing the tricolor flag: came in and offered their services to the* Government at Campag, Boularpari. At Bourail two tribes of natives are fighting among themselves. Several have been.' killed.
