WELLINGTON.
This day Sold Duty Abolition.
lio Mr George's Abolition of Gold Dnty Bill, Mr Sheehan says, according to the Abolition of Provinces Act, the Government agreed to hand over the gold duty to local bodies as an endowment. Were the Government to interfere, the local bodies would have a fair claim on the Colony for compensation. The Government will act in accordance with the statement made by Sir Geo. Grey during his last visit to the Thames, viz., to make the Bill permissive, so that if a local body receiving the rate wishes to reduce or abolish the duty it may do so. I think the proposal fair.
