WELLINGTON.
This day. County Conference. Mr Wm. Kowe has arrived. At the County Conference the following were moved as amendments on the resolution of Mr Woolcock, that the Government take over main roads :—" That the Government should give a grant in aid to County Councils interested in the maintenance of main arterial roads leading from one County to another, especially in cases where such roads pass through native districts or waste lands of the Crown." The above was moved by Mr Beetham. The Hon. John Hall moved " That the circumstances of some portions of the colojy which will not justify the expenditure of colonial funds on lailways give a claim to assistance from those funds for construction of main ro..ds, and that main roads of colonial importance should be defined as such by the Government." The above are very important to the Thames, and were unanimously carried, about twenty members of both Houses, voting in their favor. It will be seen that northern councillors have influencad the south by the warm advocacy of their claims.
