Dr Wallis gave notice to ask on Wednesday next rhether the law in the colony, as in England, fpermitted a man to sell his wife or to maltreat her, and. to what extent. THE MISSING HAWEA. : In reply to a question, Sir George Grey said the Government had no word yet of the s.s. Hawea, though the Pretty Jane had turned up. They had applied Cor H.M.S. Nymphe to go out in search. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. Ten days' leave of absence was granted to Mr Vincent Pyke. . MINISTEBS' SALABIES AND ALLOWANCES. The Hon. Mr Ballance, replying to Mr Johnston, laid on the table the returns showing the amount of salary drawn by each Minister since taking office, and the amount beyond the actual salary by way of house allowance or travelling and other expenses; also the amount paid to each Minister not in occupation of minis* terial resideaces for rent. ■ THE CONSOLIDATED STOCK ACT. Mr Stevens asked to what extent the holders of consolidated stock have availed themselves of the provisions of the Consolidated Stock Act, 1877 ; also to what extent the last loan issue had been brought under the operation of "the Act. The information was promised ic a printed form in a few days. PUBLIC DOMAINS. In reply to Mr Wakefield, the Hon. Mr Stout said the Government did not intend to introduce this session any measure to deal with public domains and gardens throughout the colony. BAILWAY BE3EBVES. : In replying to Mr Wakefield, the Hon. Mr Macandrew said the Government had been considering the question of subdividing and throwing open for settlement reserves adjacent to railways, and a bill ] dealing with the question was in preparation.

TELEGBAPH EXTENSION; In replying to Mr Gibbs, the Hon. Mr Fisher said the Government would have no objection to expend the telegraph from Motueka to Collingwood provided those who required it were prepared to give a guarantee.

NELSON SOUTH-WEST QOLDFIELDS. _In_replying to Mr Beeves, the Hon. Mr Stout said the. Government would consider the question of appointing a local'Assistant Commissioner of Waste Lands for the Nelson south-west goldfields. ■

NEW BILLS. Several bills were introduced and read a first time. SUPPLY. ' A resolution that supply be granted to Her Majesty was brought on, and its second reading fixed for Tuesday. CIVIL BEBVICE ACTS AMENDMENT. The Hon. Mr Stout moved the second reading of the Civil Service Acts Amendment Bill, which was agreed to, and ordered to be committed next Friday. THE B.S. TAHANAKI. The Hon. Mr Fisher announced that the a.B. Taranaki, with the San Francisco mails, had not crossed the Manukau Bar at one o'clock to day. PETITIONS SELECT COMMITTEE. A Select Committee, to whom all petitions shall be first referred before going before the Public Petitions Committee, was agreed to. H.M.S. NYMPHE AND THE HAWEA.

Sir George Grey announced that the Government had received a note from Captain Townsend stating that H.M.S. Nympho would go out i.a serrch of the s.s. Hawea.

THE GOVEBNMENT STEAM YACHT. Mr Fitzroy moved for a return showing the cost of working and maintenance of the s.s. Hinemoa from the Ist of December, 1877, to the 30th June, 1878 ; also a return giving the names of those persons other than his Excellency and staff and Ministers who during the aforesaid period, travelled in the s.s. Hinemoa at the expense of the colony. The Premier said the Government would have pleasure in laying before the House the return asked for, but it would be made to include all Government steamers since 1877 to the present day. The motion was agreed to. The House then adjourned till Tuesday, at 2.30.
