THE STREETS OF GRAHAMSTOWN.
(lo the Editor of the Evening Stab.)
fiia,—My ideas of Grahamstown bare suffered a wonderful change. I thought it was a clean, well looked after place, governed by intelligent mc;i; I find it to be one of the dirtiest, muddiest towns in all New Zealand that I have been to. The dirtiest road in the County is cleaner than the best kept street in the Borough, except one or two back streets where there is little or no traffic. I have been in nearly all the towns in this fins country, and I must give this place the palm for its dirty streets and bad pavements. I can assure you, Mr Editor, you could eat your dinner upon any of the streets in Christchurch, and many towns that I could mention, places- that have 'not got half its revenue nor anything like the facilities for making good roads and footpaths. The Foreman of Works seems to know how to do his work, and I have no doubt but that if he was left to himself that instead of having his men employed ' in making and repairing fancy back streets, he would have them scraping the front streets,' and filling up the bad places in the footpath. I wish I had the power of making the Works Committee like the witch's broom in Lie fable that could not be stopped from sweeping until it swept the Borough of all its impurities.—l am, &C, VIATOB. ?
