The usual fortnightly meeting of this body was held at the Council Chamber las*; evening. Present —The Mayor, Crs Wilscn, McGowan, Price, Kenshaw, Ehrenfried and Bead. MINUTES. The minutes of the last ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. OTTIWABD COBBESPONDENCE. / A precis of the letters sent since last meeting was read. POLLEN STREET EAST. . A letter was read from Mrs Hogan complaining of the bad state of Pollen street footpath, east side near Fountain Hotel. Eeferred to Works Committee.
SHELLBACK TBACK. A letter was read from Thos. Scanlan applying for permission to sledge a few loads of quartz down,the roadbehind Wells' butcher shop, Tararu. The Town Clerk staled th-vt the Mining Inspector had visited the locality that day and had stated thrlt a road should be made over to the Kuranui Greek track. Mr Scanlan, who was present, said he was satisfied his claim was payable, and his party only wished to sledge a few loads of quartz as a test. The Mayor explained that the track had been made for foot-traffic, and the residents had refused to let Dr l Jayne ride upon it. Referred to Works Committee. PAHAU STREET. 4. letter was received from Mr Goldsworthy complaining of tte unfinished; state of the water-table near ifahatf street, which rendered the vicin?ty unhealthy ; and also the unsatisfactory state of the footpath in front of bis residence. Ke'erred to Works Committee. ■ POLLEN BTEEET WEST. A letter was received from Mr Angove drawing c Mention to the bad state of Pollen street foo^.ath from Cochrane st^er'; f~ Albert; street.

A letter was received from Mr Charles Ha t on behalf, of himself and, 50 ratepayers of Upper Albert street with reference to the bad state of the upper portion of that street
Mr Hcrt and other residents of Upper Albert street were present. Mr Hart was asked to make a definite request to the Council. Mr Hart s, :d that at present the want of the re; airs to the street was costing "the Borough a large amount of money, as the draaage filled up alLthe water-tables on the flat. They wanted a passable foot-foo-path, and if the Borough would let them have their rates, they would guaranty to keep tbe ro-din order. He offered to make a s' »ne footpath, and keep it in repair for 12 months for £25. Referred to Works Committee.
THE SEAWALL. A letter was read from Mr W. Souter, drawing attention to the damaged state of the seawall between Grahamstown and Tararu. ' V Referred to Works Committee. ■WAITER AND QUEEN STBEET FOOTPATHS. A letter was received from the. residents of Walter street—near Queen street, asking that something be done to repair the footf :.ths, or at least to lay a few loads of gravel or cindeis to make the footpath passable. Referred to Works Committee with power to act. KABAKA BOAD. A letter was received from Mr S. Ensor on behalf of himself and the residents of Mary street and Karaka Poad, asking that as the old powder magazine was now removed, that the road between Karaka Road and Mary street-be made. Referred to Works Committee. WAIOTAHI HILL. A letter was received from Messrs Jenkins, Bond and other residents relative to the unsatisfactory state of the track behind the Waiotahi battery. Referred to Works Committee. TBANBFEB OF KEBOBENE LICENSE. An application for the transfer of a keiosene license from Mr R. French to J. JNeal was acceded to. QUEEN STBI3ET. A letter v.ds received from Mr James McGowan, applying to have the footpath near the old Council chambers repaired on the usual conditions. It was resolved that the work be done. KABAKA CBEEK. The letter from the Secretary for Public Works re t c straightening of the Karaka Creek was read. Cr Renshaw moved that the Works Committee be instructed to negotiate with
the owners of property near the Karaka Creek concerning the slraighteuing of the creek, with a view to the speedy carrying out of the work; the Works Committee to have the services of' the Borough Engineer at their disposal. Carried. DA.NGBBOUS KEEOSENE.
The report of the Inspector under the Dangerous Goods Act, Mr J. B. Mason, was read. It stated that he had tested 18 samples of oil in the manner prescribed by the Act, and in three cases (where it threw off an inflammable vapour at less than 110° Farht.) he had directed the vendors to mark it dangerous. MeGowan,*ll3, 114; W. levies, 116, 116; Hewin and Co., Owen slveet, 114,114; J. Kenshaw, 108, 110. -#% CirHerrshaw said that anyone could keep and store,.kerosene that was over HOdeg. like so niuchwater. He referred to a mistake made in one of the local papers, where it was stated that out of the 19 tests only three were good, instead of vice versa. • The report was then received. : wosKs committee's befort.

Stephenbou on the Beach Koad, we consider it is one of those cases iv which, from the natural formaHon of the ground,nnd from the nature; of Hie -soil, it is unnecessary .1 o enfore the regulation? of the Public Health Act; and, with regard to the higher portion of Upper Albert street, your committee recommend that Mr Hurt arid the other residents be asked to define exactly t.he work they require done; and, when they nave done co, that a plan and specification, with cost, be prepared by the Foreman of Works, to be Bubmitted to the next sitting of tho Cornell.
The report was adopted without comment.
THE BtTBGESS BOLL
. The Town Clerk said that the Pouncil would doubtless be aware that since the Burgess Roll was printed the Borough had been divided into wards. He wished to know what would be done with reference to the showing of the divisions on the roll. He suggested that 100 copies of the roll be taken, and ;.ay for the roll for the JNorth Ward all the names of those in the South and Middle Ward would be erased, and so on. It would cost about £12 10s to prepare ICO in the manner he had described. ; After some discussion the matter was, referred to the Works Committee. v FOOTPATHS. Cr McGowan moved that the Foreman of Works and Works Committee be empowered to put a few leads of gravel on the footpaths wliere required. Cr Price seconded, and the motion was carried. : . • WILLOUGHBi STJBEBT. Cr Renshaw moved that the Works Committee be instructed to have a few loads of gravel put on the Willoughby street footpath, between West's and the Willoughby Hotel. Carried. ' "; THAMES AND WAIKATO BAILWAT BILL. Cr Retashaw moved that the Mayor and Cr McGowan be special delegates to attend the conference at Auckland for the | purpose of receiving the draft of the , Thames and Waikato Railway Bill. Carried. THE HOSPITAL. Cr Eurofifried moved that the Town Clerk bo instructed to reply to the Government that the Council will take over the coutrol and maintenance of the Hospital on the conditions mentioned in the circular.
Cr Wilson seconded, and the motion was carried.
Cr Ehrenfried suggested that a letter, explaining the circumstances under which they took oTer the hospital, be sent to the Government. He moved that the Mayor 1 and Town Clerk draw up a letter to that effect. The motion was carried with two dissentients—Crs JJenshaw and McGrowan, who thought that it would be unwise to do so. BOBOTJCffI ENDOWMBNT3, Cr Ehrenfried said tha"; there seemed to be a difficulty with reference to the Waihou West block (intended for an endowment to the Borough). At first they were told that only one signature was required, and' then three, and now it was said that seven were needed. He moved that the Mayor take steps for acquiring possession of the Waihou West block. Carried. The Council then adjourned.
