At the meeting of the Chamber of Com- j merce held this afteuoon, on the question of kerosene, the following resolution was passed :—" That it is expedient that a committee of this Chamber do place themselves in communication with the! City Council and the Government with the view of devising moans for meeting the j difficulties arising out of the presence in the city of a considerable stock of kerosene oil which has been reported *o be dangerous, and to report the result to the Chamber as soon as .possible." The meeting takes place to morrow. The Government are about to issue two j shilling and five shilling postage stamps. The first issue wil probably be on the Ist of July. JRewi, the Ngatimaniapoto chief, is to be called to the Upper House next week. This day. Messrs Conyers and Lawson, heads of railway department, for the South and North Islr ids respectively, proceeded to Auckland today for the purpose of examining the working of the railways, with a view to improvement. The total European population of Wellington Provincial District is, 51,648. Males, 28,269; females, 23,379. The estimate of the Maori population is not yet ascertained. ' In connection with the present kerosene scare, Dr Hector scads a letter to the town clerk, ?n which he says he finds from experiments on a small scale in the laboratory that kercene having a flashing point of 85 degrees can be rectified so as to have its flashing point rais d to 115 degrees, with the loss of five per cent, of bulk; and with proper prrcaution the dangerous oil now imported can be converted into a marketable l.erosene, without_danger -ttndrat a BnT*t~cO3C. ———~~
