TIMARU.
Wednesday.
In the Supreme Court this afternoon, in the case oi' Mary Mavin, for stealing a, ring and watch chain, both prosecutor's wife and Inspector Pender considered her of unsound mind, and His Honor reserved; his decision. John Higgins Jenkins, for two charges of forging and uttering, was sentenced to six yean' hard labour. David McCracken, for horse stealing, received two years' hard labour. Owing .to a misunderstanding, the Oamaru Volunteers arrived this morning to fire a n?atch with the Timaru Volunteers. Correspondence had been going on as to the date, bu; the Timaru Volunteers understood it was Thursday, the 20th instant, and Oamaru understood it was the 12th. No one received the visitors. After a deal of trouble, a few Voluateers went and practised the howitzers in presence of the visitors, and tlie latter returned to Oamaru by the afternoon train. Great regret was expressed. It is believed that if the Oamaru Volunteers do not come again on the 20th the Timaru Volunteers will pay them a visit on a day to be named.
