DEFENCE OF OUR R.M.—REPLY TO "A CITIZEN."
■■- (To the Editor of tbe Evening Star.) Sib,—L also as a lover of fair play, regret to notice your correspondent " A Citizen" taking exception to and con* demning our K.M. re Constable* Scott I reckon the Magistrate's remajkff were perfectly justifiable j hi fact, I think he would have failed"fa his duty ps dispenser of justiee~if he had not condemned in the .strongest term's the crime of the Constable in question. I i.ay it was most conclusively proved (I judge from your report) that he committed a most unjustifiable assault upon an individual who Was guilty of no offence whatever, and until "Citizen" proves the witnesses guilty of perjury who testified they saw the assault committed by Scott, or until the Sub Inspector makes public the facts of the " searching enquiry" he made on the Constable's behalf; until then we, are bound to hold with Captain Fraser that any one undar the cloak of guardian of, the peace commits a bre .ch of the same is not fit, and should not occupy, the position. What is it to us. " they are a fine body of men P " but I fail to see it. "Citizen" is evidently interested'in the police r and is acquainted with their goings oat and Comings in, when he testifies so confidently to their vigilance and attention. Perhaps he could tell us when a recent ease that was the talk of the town is going to "be brought before the proper authorities! My experience of the "force" in question, from the head down, is that they are more autocrats than servants of the public.—l am, Ac, , Anothkb Citizen. Shortland, June 11th, 1878. ,
